Rivers and Floodplain Management
This subject area has led to several themes for research and teaching. Threads of enquiry include:
- using invertebrates and channel heterogeneity as indicators of river restoration success (River Ise in Northamptonshire and River Gaywood in Norfolk )
- monitoring and management of floodplain wetland habitats (Upper Nene Valley )
- environmental impact of gravel extraction on floodplains (The Nene Valley )
- community participation in decision making - planning processes (Friends of the Upper Nene; Upton Meadows residents group; young people's inclusion and engagement in Sustainable Development and land use planning )
- Strategic river catchment planning - Water Framework Directive
- Flood resilience infrastructures Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) in collaborating with Coventry University, University of Abertay, University of Edinburgh, University of Middlesex and University of Worcestershire.
- SUDS monitoring: assessing ecosystem status and function of constructed aquatic habitats and wetlands
- Sustainability assessment of the Upton Urban Extension in Northampton; collaboration with English Partnerships
- Landscape characterisation in partnership with Northamptonshire County Council
- Green Infrastructure planning and management (ecosystem services) in partnership with the River Nene Regional Park project (RNRP)
