The use of financial resources in an effective manner is essential to the survival and success of organisations. This module is, therefore, concerned with developing an understanding of how organisations can achieve their financial goals. Central to the achievement of the above is a sound knowledge of sources of finance (including capital markets) and a clear understanding of the techniques that lead to the correct investment decisions. The module will offer a thorough, but not essential, grounding for further study at Level 3 with regard to the Corporate Finance module.

Financial Reporting is offered as a core discipline within accounting and finance and has a key role in this context. The module provides an important link across level 2 subjects as well as bridging the gap between the level 1 subject Financial Accounting and the level 3 subjects of Advanced Accounting Theory and Practice, Taxation and Auditing. It consolidates and builds upon knowledge gained at level 1 accounting and prepares students for the more advanced aspects to be covered at level 3. Topics studied at level 1 are primarily concerned with legalities, techniques, numbers and calculations. This Module develops these aspects to an advanced stage but the emphasis is a change in perspective towards a more conceptual approach. This requires study of the theories underpinning financial accounting practice, the motivations directing corporate reporting and addresses the topical issues and controversies facing the profession and the regulatory framework.

This unit builds on the Year 1 module Cost and Management Accounting and develops both Quantitative Methods and aspects of Management Accountancy in more detail and to a greater depth. Successful completion of this module will contribute to the knowledge required for the level 3 option module Strategic Management Accounting. In order for management accountants to be able to provide management with information that will allow them to make decisions, and to plan and control all aspects of the business, they must be aware of the management techniques/tools available, and be able to choose the one most appropriate for the situation under review.

This module formally introduces students to financial institutions including Banks and other financial service providers. The module investigates the nature and role of these financial institutions and analyses their products and operational strategies. The purpose is to develop a greater awareness of the financial environment and regulatory restrictions imposed. In addition, this module seeks to raise the students awareness of the market for personal financial services and develop an understanding of the competitive scope that the market faces. Consideration will also be given to the regulatory environment faced by competing institutions. Whatever the nature of the regulatory controls in the finanacial services industry which seek to protect consumers, students who are knowledgeable about saving and investing, borrowing, insuring against risk, retirement planning etc, are better prepared to deal with personal finance matters, and so better protected from the many pitfalls that arise.
