The module introduces students to the essential constitutional machinery of both the United Kingdom and the European Union, as well as to the European Union's developing legal system, its underlying principles and the methodology of studying European Law. It considers issues and theories fundamental to an understanding of the development and operation of the EU and its legal relationship with the UK. As this is a foundation module for both LAW2005 (Law of the European Institutions) and LAW2008 (Public Law), issues and areas will be addressd here in introductory fashion and explored in more depth in those modules as well as in other level 2 and 3 option modules.

The rationale of the module is to develop a higher level of legal skills which are relevant to professional legal practice for those students who are interested in a career in law, and to be an introduction to professional legal skills at Levels 2 and 3. There are therefore co-requisites of " Legal System"(Law1003) and any one from "The Law of Contract" (LAW1001); "Criminal Law" (LAW1008); "Sports Law" (LAW1009); "Immigration, Asylum and Nationality" (LAW1011). Students studying this module can thus make use of their knowledge of the English legal system and the content of at least one area of substantive law.

Issues relating to immigration, nationality and aslyum law, are growing areas of interest, particularly in today's political climate and would attract not only law students, but also those studying politics, sociology, criminology and history. The module would be very relevant to these subject areas. The module would also complement other Law modules taught in year 1 such as Legal Systems, Law and Society and Professional Legal Skills, as well as level 2 and 3 modules such as those on human rights Law.
