The legal content of the module encompasses aspects of both Constitutional and Administrative Law (mainly the former), so that the module is recognised by both the Law Society and Bar for professional exemption purposes. The module embraces the philosophy that the law in this area cannot properly be understood without reference to the wider political context within which it operates, and students will therefore encounter material dealing with political practice as well as legal rules.

This module covers both private and public child law. Private Law - The rights and obligations of parenthood are examined in two areas: the court's powers in regulating the parties' care of contract with their children; and the rules regarding financial support. Public Law - The law governing local authorities and their duties in this area is examined, together with the question to what extent, and, how, should their powers be restricted? The module also focuses on the increasingly important issue of children's rights, and the conflict that arises between the rights of the child and the rights of the parents. In particular, this is examined in the context of corporal punishment, medical treatment, and adoption.
