A dissertation is the culmination of most programmes of undergraduate study with the opportunity to design and conduct an independent research project. Dissertations can take many forms, although all must be built upon a sound academic framework. Students select a topic of interest, and develop this into a researchable idea during the summer period preceding their third year. Students on specialist marketing awards (eg. Retail Marketing, Advertising with PR etc) must select a topic which reflects that specialism. Business Entrepreneurship students must select a topic that reflects their award. All other students can select any topic within the broad disicipline of marketing. The first term of the third year is typically spent drafting the literature review and designing the data collection phase. Data is collected shortly after the Christmas break, with the remainder of the second term devoted to data analysis, interpretation and writing up. Dissertations are submitted at the end of April.

Students undertake one piece of independent research leading to the production of a single research report (dissertation). The research must be interdisciplinary, drawing from both of the students subjects. However, both subjects do not necessarily have to be represented equally in the study. Previously successful joint dissertations have linked marketing with subjects as diverse as Business, Human Resource Management, Drama, Media and Popular Culture, English and Education.

A large-scale piece of independent research resulting in the production of a dissertation is traditionally the culmination of undergraduate degree programmes. The value of the dissertation is in providing students with the opportunity to further develop and demonstrate high level academic skills through the identification of a suitable topic, the development and justification of an appropriate means of investigating this topic, and the presentation of a logical and defensible response to the issues indentified.
