This module provides students with a basic understanding of the nature of organisations and of human processes within organisations. It explores the behaviour of individuals, groups and teams within organisations and concepts such as power and organisational culture and change.

"Managing People" aims to provide students from all backgrounds with the appropriate skills and knowledge which are essential in dealing with a variety of situations involving people at work. This stage one module provides a firm basis of practical "people management" knowledge for non-specialist managers of people in any type of organisation. It forms a foundation year which can lead to further, more theoretical study for many students in the more specialist Human Resource Management & Organisational Development modules at Stages 2 & 2. The aim of the module is to provide an understanding of the personnel or HR function by exploring the systems and frameworks which are necessary for organisations to manage and sustain the employment relationship. It also explores the principles of best practice in relation to the management of people of work. HRM is an area of rapid change within business and the changes taking place in the field of employment practice, including an introduction to global trends, is considered within the wider context of management. It will provide a sound understanding of the management of people at work and relate this to the overall management of the organisation.

This module provides the opportunity for personal growth and change by individuals. It recognises the importance of personal development as an integrating function for effective managers. It enables managers to consider their strengths and weaknesses and to devise a personal development plan that will help them maximise their management skills and abilities. The majority of the module is placed at the start of the course to encourage students to assess their development needs and then link their development plans to the content of the other modules. The communications aspects of personal development, in particular report writing, and presentation skills are also required early so that they can be developed and applied to each module.

The module explores the links between mentoring / coaching, training, CPD, and staff development. During this module, learners will be encouraged to reflect on how an organisation's internal environment can help or hinder the development of a mentoring and coaching culture. How coaching may be used in different settings within the organisation, administration, systems, finance, sales, operations, for example. How coaching and mentoring may be linked to continuing professional development (CPD), training, staff development and the internal staff review and appraisal processes.
