Description:
The study of organisational behaviour is the study of design and behaviour of organisations and the groups and people within them. The module aims to equip students with the theoretical frameworks required to understand and critically assess complex organisational problems. As organisations struggle to respond to the competitive environment, the appropriateness of existing organisational arrangements is often in question. In addition, every organisation, whether large or small, is made up of individuals whose behaviour, singly or collectively, is influenced by a complex range of inernal and external factors; some of which may not be immediately apparent. This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the theory of organisations, their relationship to their environments and how to make the most effective use of people, their skills and knowledge, experience and potential.

This module will focus on the work of a Personnel or HRM function in a modern organisation, exploring the role of the HR specialist, the various skills and techniques which can be used and the changes which are taking place in the field of employment practice, including an introduction to global trends in patterns of work and wider contexts of HRM. It will provide a deeper understanding of the management of people at work and the academic, theoretical and professional debates which are taking place in the field. These themes and topics will be explored at a more strategic, national and international level in the Level 3 Strategic HRM Module.

The focus of this module is the organisation and the academic study of how organisations work. Although we will consider how researchers have sugguested that organisations can be managed, a distinct focus of this module is how managers work within organisations impact upon how managers, often at a junior or middle rank, can manage their responsibilities.

The vehicle for this development will be through the opportunity to explore a management problem in some detail. The module, where applicable and feasible, will encourage students to develop a relationship with an organisation to investigate a management problem, in an organisational setting, as a means of further developing their management skills. This module will build upon the business skills developed in the first part of year one and support/develop students further for undertaking their disseration.

This module enhances management and organisational studies by introducing the student to the significance of cross-cultural management in the context of a rapidly internationalising business environment. It looks at theoretical studies of national and international culture and relates these to international management practice. This would suit students who foresee working in an international context. Given that most of the theory and cases used to not demand a previous knowledge of organisational studies, there are no pre-requisites and thus the module would be open to students from a strategy of organisational background who wish to understand international management and national cultural behaviour in more depth.
