A programme of independent study, often culminating in a dissertation, is a traditional capstone for undergraduate courses that allows the student to demonstrate a deep insight into a topic through the design and conduct of an independent investigation. This opportunity is provided to students on the University's business Awards and this description sets out some general criteria for dissertations in the group. Given that business degrees have different, although often similar, objectives this module follows a generic dissertation framework used on other degree programmes within the Business School. For those students who have completed a one-year placement, operational problem solving will have featured strongly. Dissertations are, therefore, likely to involve either a major conceptual work or a practical dissertation, eg. in which the student reflects upon placement experiences and produces a practical, management-oriented account. Wherever possible, students will be encouraged to pursue topics that link to tutor interests.
