In focusing on the area of mental health, the module explores psychological attempts to understand and treat problems known as 'mental health problems' and contrasts these approaches with the medical approach.The module also offers an opportunity to address questions relating to the known causes of 'disorders' and to encourage careful ethical and social debates regarding the ways people with forms of mental distress are treated by mental health professionals.

This module explores in depth two areas of psychology concerned with the important yet often poorly understood areas of experimental parapsychology and the psychology of anomalous experience. The aim is to enable students to explore and evaluate those aspects of experience that seem to challenge conventional scientific paradigms, and to foster in them a balanced sceptical perspective when evaluating or attempting to account for anomalous claims.

This module extends the study of developmental psychology in level which focuses upon childhood and adolescence, into adult development and ageing. It draws on diverse areas of psychology such as social, clinical and health, in order to offer students a range of perspectives for understanding aspects of adult development. Emphasis is placed on the development of personality, on personal relationships, the experience of work, health and well-being in adulthood and later life, the meaning of life satisfaction in the later years, and myths and stereotypes of ageing.

This module explores in depth transpersonal psychology and psychology of religion. The aim for transpersonal psychology is to enable students to explore and evaluate what might be described as the "farther reaches of human nature" (Maslow), including peak and spiritual experiences. The psychology of religion seeks to understand some of the psychological processes within the whole sphere of the religious experience.

This module extends the level two biological psychology work of motivation and emotion. It places an emphasis on biological processes and explanations, but also considers other perspectives. Ethological findings and theories inform the study of motivation and emotion throughout. Students will be able to consider the application of the study areas in this module to a wide variety of different areas, including pleasure, pain, achievement, eating, drug use and sexual behaviour. Since motivation and emotion also fit well within a positive psychology context, students will be able to develop their understanding of positive psychology through this module.

The module in Educational Psychology explores the role of the Educational Psychologist within the British education system. The module enables students to become aware of the cognitive, emotional and behavioural difficulties in children, including Special Educational Needs (SEN) that the Educational Psychologist must deal and the methods of assessment and intervention offered as treatment for such difficulties. The module will also provide the opportunity for a placement within an educational establishment or with an Educational Psychology service.

Description:
This module builds on and expands students' prior knowledge of psychological theory and research methodology acquired at levels one and two. It aims to foster the development of expertise in a specific area of psychology and the skills necessary to plan, conduct and write a review of a substantial body of scientific literature. Students will produce a report which should enable a reader to understand the main direction of research under review, the nature of the body of the body of work undertaken in the area, the critical issues addressed and the extent to which they have been resolved. It should also inform the reader of the issues or problems outstanding, point to gaps in the coverage of the subject and advise on areas for further study and research. The module will, therefore, develop students' ability to synthesise and critically evaluate current knowledge on a psychological issues, and to work independently to high standards of scholarship.
